"When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?"
I wanted to be an interpreter. I realize this sounds ridiculous but I have my elementary school papers where I documented this vocational dream on more than one occasion. I tried to learn sign language. I tried to learn French in a fourth grade independent study. I wanted to work in Washington DC and travel.
I now confess to have very little interest in politics and I want to visit DC mainly to see Dorothy's ruby slippers at the Smithsonian. As for languages: I took a semester of sign language in college, but I remember more signing from an episode of Days of Our Lives where a mute Kayla signed her vows to Patch on a boat. I was a Spanish major my freshman year of college until I realized the 8am classes were conflicting with my busy nightlife activities. I can translate some Spanish, I know nonverbal communication and thanks to Miah I can say a few words in Chinese.
Other than that I am fluent in translated toddler in its many dialects, as well as tantrum talk, pouty mumbling, teenage" hic town wanting to be bad ass" slang, and silent cries for help. Speaking of cries I can hear a cry a block away and know if it will require a band-aid, an ambulance or an "i told you so."
Now I want to be an astronaut. What did you want to be?
